Make the BEST EVER chocolate play dough with this super quick, no-cook recipe that smells A-MAZING! Perfect for sensory play, alternative Easter gifts for kids and DIY take home party favours, as well as every day invitations to play.
Ok, I’ll be honest. This is the THIRD post on this blog about our best ever chocolate play dough because we love it SO much and we have to make it often! But each time we make it the kids are at different ages and stages and play with it in such interesting and different ways.
I also thought with Easter fast approaching that it would be a good reminder of how to make this for those who would love an alternative Easter basket gift idea for the kids. OR at least as a supplementary gift to offer in place of some of those eggs and sweets!
If you’ve already tried our (now world famous!) Best Ever No-Cook Play Dough recipe then you’ll know just how super easy peasy and QUICK it is to make.
This best ever chocolate play dough is just as easy and varies slightly in the ingredients and quantities, so follow along carefully. Once made it should smell absolutely delicious (so delicious you’ll have to bake a chocolate cake next to stop kids tasting this!) and will last for months when stored in an airtight container.
How to make the best ever chocolate play dough:
Ingredients:
2 cups plain flour (all purpose)
1 cup salt
1/2 cup cocoa powder (NOT powdered hot chocolate)
3 tablespoons oil (any)
2 cups boiling water
2 tablespoons cream of tartar (buy in bulk- lasts for ever and cheaper!)
4-5 drops vegetable glycerine
Tools:
Measuring Cups (using real measuring cups is important!)

Method:
Combine the dry ingredients in a bowl and then add the oil, stirring through. Now add the boiling water, one cup at a time, carefully. Mix through until full combined, add the glycerine and allow to rest for a few minutes to cool down.
Now start to knead, knead, knead!
The kneading really brings this all together and makes it super soft, stretchy and smooth.

Set it out alongside paper cupcake cases, small beads (we used Hama/ Perler beads), candles, cookie cutters, rolling pin and anything else you fancy.
It works so well to use old chocolate boxes for children to make their own sweets and press them into the spaces.
As you get nearer to Easter you could use Easter egg moulds or patterned rolling pins to make special treats.
We went on to use this exact same batch of chocolate play dough to play flower shop pretend play, using it to create mud in flower pots! I’ll post about that next on the blog, but you can find a similar idea here in the blog archives if you’re keen to see it now! Find our Flowers and Mud Play Dough Activity here!
