She is really fascinated with putting things into boxes and containers at the moment and will spend ages investigating how things fit together, at a very basic level.
So I gave her a muffin tin and an egg carton, then cut up a couple of long cardboard tubes into a pile of little pieces. I sat with her and put some into the holes in the tin and she laughed and copied.
She carefully picked them up and examined them and placed some in the tin, filling up most of the holes. Then she noticed the egg carton and loved opening and closing it repeatedly to discover what it could do. She absolutely loves boxes so this was a real hit with her. Got to love what the recycling box has to offer!
Simple and fun investigative baby play…
…that absorbed her attention, made her think……
…and was apparently lots of fun too!

She is just precious!!!! I love how you use simple, inexpensive activities to teach and entertain your children. It’s NOT the high-tech, expensive toys they love the most! My 4 year old son can play for hours with a few Matchbox cars and a roll from wrapping paper or paper towels.

Great idea! I think my almost 18 month old would even enjoy that! I can make it more advanced by encouraging her to stack them and do big-little.
Anna @ The Imagination Tree says
Sarah you should try the rolling and stacking discovery box idea (see the tab at the top of the page.) Sounds like your little one would enjoy that too!

This is a really great idea. I wondered if you’d like to be featured in our Go Play! Showcase? I don’t know if you’ve seen the showcase on NurtureStore but I’d love to include you. Maybe drop me an e-mail if you’d like to?
Anna @ The Imagination Tree says
Hi Cathy, I haven’t seen it but I will take a look. Thanks. Will email you.
