5 A Day Books: Week 6

May 23, 2011 by Anna Ranson

Read all about our 5-a-day book challenge here and please consider joining in!
I have LOVED seeing all of your book choices and hearing about the benefits that you are noticing with your own children! Kate from An Amazing Child says that her young son is now retelling parts of stories and has begun to take part in imaginative play since starting the 5-a-day book challenge!
This week my Little Pop (13 months) was joining in with We’re Going on a Bear Hunt! Every time we neared the repetitive “Uh Oh!” phrase, she would predict it and shout it out loud! Wonderful.
So, even if you can’t manage five or there are days when you skip it all together, please keep it up! There’s nothing better that we can do for our children at this stage of their development.
Here are our 5 for the week

My Mum and Dad Make me Laugh by Nick Sharratt. We have had this one before but it will no doubt come up many times as it is SUCH a favourite. So many things to look for and talk about in the pictures, a very funny and consistent joke throughout the story and a great twist at the end!
Monkey Puzzle by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler. From the creators of The Gruffalo, this is another clever rhyming story with lots of great nature questioning and discussion points throughout.
Ten Little Fingers and Ten Little Toes by Mem Fox and Helen Oxenbury was a book given to Little Pop at her 8 month check by BookStart. How I love the BookStart initiative! This is perfect for babies and young toddlers. Beautiful pictures of babies and simple rhyme that encourages actions and interaction between adult and child.
Noisy by Shirley Hughes is a real favourite, as are all Shirley Hughes stories. Simple, short, rhyming and very familiar subject matter- noisy children!

My First Signs by Annie Kubler isn’t really a great book for a 5-a-day choice as it isn’t a story. It is a collection of baby signs, but Cakie is absolutely smitten with it at the moment and asks for it a few times a day anyway, so it seems silly not to include it! We will use the pictures as great discussion points.

Please share your choices and inspire us all with a new range of books to read to our children! You can link up any book or story related post below.

Ok, so now I am really starting to think that you are working for Nick Sharratt 🙂 Although you could probably say the same about me with Mem Fox and Pamela Allen 🙂 If you like 10 little fingers you’ll love Possum Magic. It’s fabulous.

I love 10 little fingers and 10 little toes! It’s such a gem. My husband has it memorized and recites it over the phone while we hold the book when he is on business trips. I’m excited to look into your other books as well!

I love this! I will post our 5 for this week tomorrow (a few days late) and then try to do a post every Monday with our new books. I am excited to find some new book ideas.

I love reading with my daughter.. does it count if you don’t add in new books often? I spend everyday reading at least 5-10 books to my 20 month old daughter from her shelf of about 25 books (I get new ones when I can) and she even ‘reads’ them on her own! She quotes books properly and it impresses me so well! my sister recently gave us some phonics books and she has taken to those so well because they have simple phrases like “see dad” she brings me those books almost every time I let her choose!

    Just wondering?!?

Anna, I referenced 5 a day books and your excellent post on ‘Rhyme’ in my recent post about Books and Boys. Thanks for the inspiration http://mrsm-adventuresplay.blogspot.com/2011/05/boys-and-books.html

My ID twin boys are 14 months old. They LOVE us reading to them and only stop when we distract and hide the books ( after reading 3 or 4 books over and over up to 10 times each). They particular like matching things, relationship books (fast and slow, up and down) as well as animal noises and books u can also sing like old mac Donald and itsy bitsy spider. I would like to get more books so we can rotate weekly. Is there a list somewhere or can u make re come rations for this age group? Ten little fingers looks good! The monkey book too!

    Thanks in advance!

Wow they sound like super intelligent, well-engaged little boys! I’m afraid I don’t have an overall list of book suggestions but if you click on the 5-a-day books image in the sidebar I *think* (hope!) it will take you to all of those posts, which you could browse for some ideas. I guess I haven’t chosen as many truly “baby” books as I pitch them more at the 2 year old’s level, but my 16 month old always loves and tries to join in with whatever we are looking at. Hope you find some lovely books to try!
