Rainbow Cloud Craft: The Story of the Kindness Elves book

January 25, 2017 by Anna Ranson

Make a beautiful rainbow cloud craft to hang on display or as a mobile in a kids room! A lovely book related craft idea to accompany The Story of the Kindness Elves.

As you may know, my first children’s picture book, The Story of the Kindness Elves, was published in December! It tells the story of who the Kindness Elves are, the magical land in the clouds where they live and the wonderful things they do all day, from kindness potion making to mixing coloured raindrops to pour through the clouds! It then tells the story of how they first came to work alongside children to do acts of kindness together as a team, helping others in meaningful ways.

My own children have adored reading the story and particularly love imagining the magical things that the Kindness Elves do in their homes in the clouds. We are starting a series of book related crafts, play and learning activities to go along with the story and can’t wait to share them with you! If you’re a teacher using this book in your classroom or your own kids have enjoyed hearing it at home, you may love to join us too.

The first book related craft we made was a rainbow cloud like the wonderful rainbow coloured raindrops which the Kindness Elves pour their potions into! We used some cardboard cut into drop shapes and set it out with jars full of paint in the full rainbow.

They each painted a pile of them with a couple of coats of paint, then spread them with coloured glitter glue to match after they were dry. It’s hard to do justice with the photographs but each raindrop is brilliantly coloured and SO sparkly! It’s all kinds of wonderful for lifting the mood on a dismal January day!

We then stapled some large, white cardboard packaging and cut it into a giant cloud shape. Onto this they spread lots of PVA (white) glue with paintbrushes, then covered the whole piece with plenty of cotton balls.

The fluffy cloud was complete and just needed its magical rainbow raindrops!

We stuck these onto cotton thread with tape and attached them to the back of the cloud in rainbow order. It would be even better to sew them through if you find a strong enough needle or thin enough cardboard!

These spin and flutter around and look really beautiful. The finished masterpiece is now hanging in Miss 8’s bedroom but they’re all fighting over who gets to have it on display next! It makes a great place to sit underneath and tell the story together! We can pretend the happiness and laughter potions are falling on our heads and making us jump in puddles and dance 😀

Miss 4 has requested a Kindness Elves birthday party next month (yes, really!) and this will make a gorgeous centrepiece for celebrating all things magical and kind! I’m also planning on having a mini version of this set up as a party craft activity for all the guests to join in with. Can’t wait to share those too!

If you’d like to read more about my Kindness Elves tradition and how you can use them to spread a love of kindness with your own family, read all about them in our original post here and find them now on their own website for sale here too!

If you’ve already got your Kindness Elves and want some ideas to get you started, here are our favourite 25 ways to use them!
