Matching Alphabet Beans Literacy Game

Make an alphabet beans literacy game and an ongoing resource to use in lots of activities together!Alphabet Beans matching game literacy activity

 

Using some ordinary, dry butter beans (sold in the bag at the supermarket), I wrote on the letters of the alphabet using a black Sharpie marker to create a set of alphabet beans for literacy play! We recently used beans to make a colour sorting game and these were left over and ready to use for more fun.Alphabet beans for literacy play

 

The beans went into a basket and I set up an Invitation to Play with a mini muffin tray filled with paper cake cases. Inside each one I wrote a letter of the alphabet for matching the beans to.Alphabet beans literacy activity

 

Miss 4 played the game and sounded out each letter as she found and matched it.Alphabet beans matching activity

The beans are lovely and tactile, making a kinaesthetic learning resource for other possible literacy games too. By making another few sets of each letter they would be perfect for using to spell out small words, practise name writing or to select initial letter sounds to match objects. Adapt these for any stage of literacy development!Alphabet beans and muffin cases game

The children are currently 5, 4 and 2.

What they are learning as they play:

literacy: recognising letters by name and sound (grapheme and phoneme), matching letters together by sight and by sound

    I love the look of this task and plan to make some of these beans for our holiday as I thought they would be easily transportable and perfect for getting out on the patio. I may also try adapting it to include dance to use on my blog, http://www.offspringers.com/blog (crediting you as inspiration of course) if you are happy for me to do that? Do let me know if you would prefer I didn’t but I thought it might be nice to use them to spell out dance words then perform them to help word association and kinaesthetic learning….
