Make a construction site gravel pit for a great outdoor imaginative play area for kids to enjoy! This little play space is sure to inspire creativity and storytelling and can be used in conjunction with favourite construction themed picture books too.
We recently added a fun little imaginative small world play area to the garden, next to our original Play Garden space. In a small area of the lawn border we simply created a circle patch using some logs, large rocks and bricks and then tipped in one bag of small aquarium gravel to fill it up!
Hey presto, one construction site small world play area all ready to go!
To the gravel pit we added one set of gorgeous, small construction vehicles and a few larger pebbles and stones and that was all we needed for the play to begin!
They enjoy digging, scooping, transferring, climbing the large “mountains” aka the rocks and logs, building roads and going on journeys. If we add in some play people they can use them to make conversations and create more storytelling imaginative play.
Pairing up the play with some reading of these fabulous digger books outside, would make the best playtime ever!
At night time a small piece of tarpaulin or plastic sheeting, cut to size, can simply be placed over the top and weighed down with some of the bricks, to ensure no animals come and use it as a toilet. So far, so good with that simple plan!
We also made another little space for imaginative and small world play in the opposite border, which we shall share soon!
What they are learning as they play:
creativity: using toys and loose materials to make games and tell stories
physical: sensory play, transferring small objects, digging and scooping
