5 A Day Books: Week 4

May 9, 2011 by Anna Ranson

                                                               5 a day books

Read all about our 5-a-day book challenge here and please consider joining in!
Today I am guest posting all about the importance of RHYME as a foundation for early literacy skills over at An Amazing Child. Please click the link to read the article as it’s such an important topic and one that is central to the 5-a-day-book challenge. (Also consider joining Kate’s amazing The Education Network: TEN as a place to find and share resources, discuss current educational issues and post photos and ideas without the need for a blog to link from.)
Our 5 for this week

If you saw the post about the Castle Story Box that we made this week, you will have seen that C. was using it to retell parts of Jack and the Beanstalk from memory. So I’ve picked another Nick Sharratt rhyming fairy tale so that we can learn his version of the story by heart. She’s loving it already!
Due to the wonderful cardboard box challenge hosted by TinkerLab this week, I’ve been thinking of stories about boxes and remembered this one from my teaching days. It is old fashioned but always a winner with every class. It is set out in rhyme and talks about all of the crazy, funny skills that clever international cats have, and always ends with “but my cat likes to hide in boxes.” Funny, repetitive, rhyming and great for vocabulary, geography and discussion.
This is the first in a series of wonderfully funny, rhyming stories about a cheeky little dog called Hairy Maclary who gets into all sorts of mischief. Fabulous for retelling and predicting the rhyming words.
From the wonderful Dr Seuss, this is one of my favourite books from childhood (although some of the pictures are creepier than I remember!) Great rhymes, very silly, good fun!
Beautiful illustrations, simple and moving text. No rhyme but rich descriptive language that is easy to remember and predict. C already knows about 50% of this by heart so I’m interested to see if she will know it all by Sunday. I’m predicting yes!
Please link up your book choices below (or link to a related post about children’s picture books.) Alternatively, just list your titles and ideas in the comments section. I look forward to reading them!

Well, our new books are on hold for this week while we are eagerly waiting to join the library. But luckily J is still obsessed with the ‘pie-et soot’ story 🙂
I really really have to check out the Sharratt books. And you are right, I pulled out the Dr. Seuss stories not too long ago and some of those pictures are just a little creepy! They’re still great books though.

I really liked your post Anna. I had my trusty notebook out making new lists for rhyming activities – I’m such a list maker 🙂

Dr. Seuss illustrations creepy?? LOL We have so many Dr Seuss books. It has been my 8-year-old’s favorite books for a few years now. For a while he was reading them every day. I’m a Swede living in the US so I didn’t grow up with those books but love them for the rhymes. If you can get ahold of a translated Elsa Beskow (Swedish author) book you should get it (I found one in English on amazon.com). BEAUTIFUL illustrations and cute stories. My 5-year-old’s favorite books are “Why did the chicken cross the road?” and “Where the wild things are” by Maurice Sendak. Thanks for the tips! Oh, and I second “Chicka, chicka boom boom” and “If you give a mouse a cookie”.

Oh! My Cat Likes to Hide in Boxes – I forgot about this one! I Loved it as a child and believe my little one will love it too if I ever find a copy for her! I am definitely adding this to my list of books to buy … though, it is getting rather long, lol! Currently have some ‘Arch Books’ coming from Koorong (Christian Bookshop) … short, 14pg books telling a single bible story in easy-to-understand language for kids!

Hi there! I just wanted to ask if you ever have any trouble
with hackers? My last blog (wordpress) was hacked
and I ended up losing many months of hard work due
to no backup. Do you have any methods to stop hackers?

Howdy just wanted to give you a quick heads up and let you know a few of the images aren’t loading correctly. I’m not sure why but I think its
a linking issue. I’ve tried it in two different browsers and both show the same results.

With havin so much content and articles do you ever run
into any issues of plagorism or copyright violation?
My site has a lot of unique content I’ve either written myself or outsourced but it looks like a lot of it is popping it up all over the internet without my agreement. Do you know any ways to help stop content from being stolen? I’d truly
    appreciate it.

I drop a leave a response each time I like a post on
a blog or if I have something to add to the discussion. It is
a result of the sincerness communicated in the post I read.
And on this article “5 A Day Books: Week 4”. I was actually excited enough to post a comment 😉 I actually
do have a couple of questions for you if it’s allright. Is it only me or do a few of these responses look as if they are written by brain dead individuals? 😛 And, if you are posting on additional sites, I’d like to keep
up with you. Would you make a list the complete urls of your community
sites like your Facebook page, twitter feed, or linkedin profile?
