Use a fruit box to make this adorable Hungry Caterpillar craft to go along with the favourite children’s story by Eric Carle!
I picked up some more cardboard fruit boxes from the supermaket the other week as they make a brilliant art and craft material and are free for the taking!
I remembered this lovely little craft activity from Kids Play Box using fruit boxes to paint patterned snakes, and thought we could use them to make a Hungry Caterpillar craft after reading and playing with our storytelling basket recently.
Hungry Caterpillar Craft
For this activity you simply need:
One cardboard fruit carton
Paint
Felt or pipe cleaners
Card
Scissors and glue
We cut the fruit box into long strips and rounded it off in-between each segment to make a curved, caterpillar shape.
Then the girls helped themselves to two shades of green paint and used it to decorate their caterpillars in whatever way they liked. Miss 3 added some red segments to its body, as well as its head. The bigger girls made patterns and alternated the shades of green.
When the paint was dry they cut some eye shapes from yellow paper and then either drew or painted pupils over the top and stuck them onto the face.
They chose either purple pipe cleaners or pieces of felt to create the antennae and worked out how to attach them by poking holes through the top of the head with a pen.
I love how the finished hungry caterpillars are all a little different and unique!
These would be so cute around favourite books display in the library corner or could be perfect little decorations at a book themed party!
I like the idea of adding numbers to the back and turning them into measuring and counting tools in the maths area too!
