Directions for making Chalk Spray Paint:
In a large bowl mix together 1 cup cornflour (corn starch) and half a cup of warm water and mix vigorously until well combined.
Before it settles (and turns into Oobleck!) divide the mixture into as many spray bottles as you want to make colours of paint.
When evenly divided, add a small amount of either gel food colouring or a squirt of paint to the bottle. Put the lids on and shake well until the colour has completely combined.
That’s it! All ready to go and create some gorgeous chalk spray paint art either on large sheets of paper or directly onto the ground outside.
As you can see from the pictures we started off with our paints in tiny pump action bottles but the chalk paint clogged the nozzles quickly, so we found a larger spray handle alternative which worked really well instead. Different bottles will create a range of spray effects, so try them to see which is your favourite!
The kids loved this once they had got the hang of it and added layers upon layers to each piece of artwork they created, often coming back and spraying more colours over the top once the initial layer was dry. This created such a beautiful effect and I would recommend trying it!
Another lovely idea is to spray bright colours over black or dark blue paper to make a galaxy night sky.
If it starts to thicken then add some warm water and shake vigorously to re-mix.
We have made this same recipe before and have also added lots of sparkles to it successfully to make glitter paints! That time we experimented with painting the chalk paints using paintbrushes directly onto flagstones and pavement/ sidewalk. It looks absolutely beautiful with vibrant colours which remain until the next rain-storm (or if the kids decide to wash it off with warm soapy water!)
Both are fantastic summer art and creativity projects and will keep kids of all ages busy and screen free. Yay!
We also made a version using grated chunky chalks which you can find here too!
