Make some beautiful chalk marker and CD art to create spinning mobiles to decorate any room with instant art! This is a great process art activity for all age groups and is so simple and engaging to experiment with.
We have fallen in love with chalk markers over the past year and, if you follow me on Instagram, you’ll see that I often set them out for an after school art activity for the kids and for playdates too. They seem to write on every surface and look especially amazing on cardboard (a free resources, yay!) and they’re super popular with adults too.

I am a great hoarder of “potentially useful things” (all teachers will know *exactly* what I am talking about here!) and so I had been holding onto a pile of outdated CD roms and scratched music CDs, just waiting for the perfect art project!
For a change the other day after school I suggested we try our new favourite chalk markers with these CDS and, hey presto, the most gorgeous and striking art work was created!
The process is so crazily simple, it really does just involved giving the pens a good shake and then starting to decorate and design on the CD surface! I love how very different each little art work is and how sometimes they chose to draw a picture and scene and others they tried decorative repeating patterns too.
Miss 6 made a range of Kindness Elves inspired CDs, including this rainbow one with its colourful raindrops and the word “kind” written across the top!
When they were done we snipped some lengths of parcel ribbon and taped it to the back so that we could hang them up. Some are in the window, others hanging from a small tree branch off a shelf. They catch the light and twist slightly to show off their beauty.
Some have slightly rubbed off where they were laid on top of each other briefly, so I would advise adding a layer of varnish or even clay glaze to preserve them over a long period.
I really enjoyed trying this as well and can’t wait to dig out some more old CDs to make some more; they’re addictive! Much as I love messy art activities, on some long and tiring days a quick and low-stress art project like this is just what everyone needs to unwind and let the creativity flow, with absolutely zero effort or clear up time, perfection!
